Job Title

ASIC Failure Analysis Engineer

Role Summary

Join Cisco's Quality and Reliability group in San Jose as a Failure Analysis engineer. This hybrid role (approximately three days in the office) focuses on root-cause analysis of ASIC reliability and field failures using failure-analysis (FA) techniques and tools.

The role supports product, test, and design teams by identifying failure mechanisms, recommending corrective actions, and maintaining FA processes and vendor relationships.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 8+ years of experience in semiconductor failure analysis.

Responsibilities

Primary duties include:

  • Perform root-cause failure analysis for silicon reliability tests and field failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop, document, and implement standard FA processes and test plans.
  • Coordinate FA logistics and execute systematic FA workflows using lab equipment and services.
  • Document and report FA findings to engineering and management stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical resource for FA inquiries and support cross-functional investigations.
  • Maintain relationships with FA service and equipment vendors; oversee outside lab work.
  • Interface with product, test, and design engineering to isolate and characterize faults on new technologies.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience:

  • 8+ years of hands-on semiconductor failure analysis experience.
  • Proven experience writing and executing FA plans and interpreting results from FA techniques (cross-section, X-ray, CSAM, TDR, FIB, SEM, TEM, IR/EMMI/OBIRCH).
  • Proficiency specifying hardware and implementing dynamic FA setups using SIL and LSM.
  • Experience with fault isolation using ATE, boundary-scan/ATPG, and MBIST.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor technology and processes: fabrication, assembly, and advanced packaging.
  • Solid understanding of transistor operation, device physics, and behavior under varied operating conditions.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a related technical field required; Master's degree preferred.
