GlobalFoundriesJob Title
AI/ML Systems Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)
Role Summary
Work with hardware and software engineers to characterize AI/ML workloads and map their compute and memory demands to hardware resources. The role emphasizes performance experiments, analytical modeling, and clear technical reporting.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students (sophomore or above). Intended for individuals building foundational skills in workload characterization and systems performance.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities during the internship:
- Run and analyze performance experiments on AI/ML workloads and document results with reproducible methods.
- Build analytical models to estimate throughput, latency, utilization, operational intensity, and memory bandwidth requirements.
- Identify compute or memory bottlenecks and relate workload behavior to architectural and implementation choices (cache, memory subsystem, runtime, compiler).
- Produce concise reports, visualizations, and presentations; aim for ownership of a defined workload characterization study.
- Follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and commitments for successful candidates.
- Working understanding of computer architecture concepts such as cache hierarchies, memory bandwidth, and CPU pipeline fundamentals.
- Experience using Python and data analysis tools (NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, or similar).
- Coursework or project experience applying linear algebra, probability, numerical analysis, or related mathematical methods to computing or engineering problems.
- English proficiency (written and verbal).
- Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship and travel up to 10%.
Nice-to-have:
- Prior internship or co-op experience in a related area.
- Exposure to PyTorch or TensorFlow and concepts such as FLOP counting, operator-level profiling, or the roofline model.
- Exposure to compilation, intermediate representations, or AI compiler toolchains (MLIR, IREE, TVM, etc.).
- Project management, leadership, and strong written/verbal communication skills.
Education Requirements
At least a sophomore enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's or Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field during the internship period. Minimum overall GPA: 3.0. (Degree and program enrollment are required; no alternative application-by-experience language provided.)
