AI Kernel Engineer Intern
Role Summary
Internship on the AI Kernel team focused on implementing and optimizing AI/LLM kernels for Quadric's General Purpose Neural Processing Unit (GPNPU). The role is hands-on and pairs interns with senior engineers to develop, profile, and optimize kernel code and contribute to the inference toolchain.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree; suitable for candidates with prior programming and systems coursework or project experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include developing and optimizing inference kernels and supporting profiling and tooling efforts.
- Assist in developing AI/LLM kernels and operators for the Quadric platform to enable efficient inference.
- Profile kernel performance across compute, data movement, and parallelism to find micro-architecture and software bottlenecks.
- Optimize C/C++ code with guidance from senior engineers to maximize hardware utilization.
- Collaborate with compiler, runtime, and tooling teams to integrate kernel improvements.
- Contribute to the Quadric toolchain, compiler, and runtime improvements as needed.
Requirements
Core technical skills and on-site availability for the Burlingame, CA internship.
- Must-have: Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
- Must-have: Solid foundational understanding of computer architecture and hardware-software interaction.
- Must-have: Demonstrated problem-solving, debugging skills, and clear technical communication.
- Must-have: Able to be based in the Bay Area or relocate and available to work on site in Burlingame, CA for the internship period.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with model or kernel inference performance profiling.
- Exposure to compute frameworks such as CUDA, DSP, NEON, or Triton.
- Familiarity with assembly language and low-level optimization.
- Previous internship experience in hardware-oriented software or AI/ML optimization roles.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
