Job Title

AI-Driven Physical Design Engineering (PhD Intern)

Role Summary

Join a design engineering team within Intel's Data Center Group to apply AI/ML methods to physical implementation of advanced silicon. The role focuses on developing AI-powered workflows, data-analysis pipelines, and automation to improve implementation efficiency and PPA (Power, Performance, Area).

Experience Level

Entry-level internship.

Responsibilities

Primary technical responsibilities for the intern position.

  • Research and implement AI/ML techniques to improve physical design processes.
  • Develop AI-enhanced workflows for synthesis, place-and-route, and timing-driven implementation.
  • Build ML-powered data analysis and summarization pipelines to support design decisions.
  • Design and prototype Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based systems for intelligent decision-making in design execution.
  • Develop automation frameworks and scripts using Python and common ML libraries; use TCL/Perl for flow automation as needed.
  • Collaborate with AI research and design engineering teams to integrate AI strategies into projects.
  • Evaluate and benchmark AI-driven methods against traditional approaches to quantify improvements in PPA and runtime.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and desirable additional qualifications.

  • Must-have: Proficiency with industry-standard physical design tools (synthesis, place-and-route, timing analysis).
  • Must-have: Familiarity with scripting for flow automation and debugging (Python, TCL).
  • Must-have: Understanding of digital design concepts and methodologies, including RTL design and verification.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with ML frameworks (TensorFlow or PyTorch) and applying ML in engineering workflows.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) or graph-based algorithms; familiarity with reinforcement learning concepts for optimization.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with data-analysis libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib) and strong Python programming for ML applications.
  • Nice-to-have: Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Education Requirements

Enrolled in a PhD program (required) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
