Job Title

AI Compiler and Kernel Intern - Summer 2027

Role Summary

Work on a scoped summer project applying AI agents, machine learning, and performance engineering to compilers, GPU kernels, and developer tools. You will collaborate with compiler, kernel, AI, architecture, and performance engineers to prototype, measure, and improve compiler and kernel workflows.

Projects may focus on agentic workflows, learned models, compiler optimization, GPU kernel development, performance analysis, or AI-enabled developer tools depending on your background and interests.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for current undergraduate or graduate students; suitable for candidates early in their academic careers (internship).

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities for the assigned internship project include:

  • Build AI-agent workflows that interact with code, compilers, GPU kernels, benchmarks, and performance tools.
  • Develop tools to collect data, run experiments, analyze feedback, and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Prototype improvements to compiler flows, code generation, GPU kernels, optimization tools, or developer workflows.
  • Implement interfaces between AI agents and compiler, kernel, or developer-tool infrastructure.
  • Design and run experiments; measure correctness, runtime performance, compile time, resource use, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with engineers across compiler, kernel, architecture, AI, and performance teams; document design, results, limitations, and next steps.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications and technical skills expected for successful candidates.

  • Strong programming skills in Python, C, C++, or similar languages.
  • Solid foundations in data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and quantitative problem solving.
  • Coursework, research, or project experience in one or more areas: AI, machine learning, AI agents, compilers, programming languages, GPU kernels, CUDA or accelerator programming, systems, performance engineering, optimization, or developer tools.
  • Ability to design experiments, analyze results, investigate technical problems, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Experience in one or more of AI, compiler, kernel, performance, or systems areas, and ability to learn across technical boundaries.

Requirements

Nice-to-have (ways to stand out):

  • Experience building AI agents, LLM-driven coding workflows, evaluation systems, or developer tools.
  • Knowledge of LLVM, MLIR, compiler optimization passes, code generation, or domain-specific languages.
  • Experience writing or optimizing GPU kernels with CUDA, Triton, or similar models.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning, evolutionary algorithms, predictive modeling, search, or high-dimensional data analysis.
  • Contributions to research, internships, open-source projects, or personal projects that measure runtime, compile time, resource use, or developer productivity.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar technical field.

Compensation

Expected hourly range: 20 USD – 94 USD. Eligible for intern benefits.
