Advanced Photonics Engineer

Role Summary

The Advanced Photonics Engineer will define and drive next-generation silicon photonics devices and system architectures for productization. The role sits on the Advanced Photonics team within the Silicon Photonics Product Line and focuses on translating industry and customer requirements into device concepts, development programs, and manufacturable solutions.

Responsibilities

Contribute technical leadership across device, system, and manufacturing domains and engage with customers to shape product-relevant photonic solutions.

  • Define and drive roadmaps for advanced photonic devices aligned to business and customer needs.
  • Architect and design advanced photonic building blocks and subsystems.
  • Translate system-level requirements into device- and platform-level designs suitable for industrialization.
  • Collaborate with customer development teams and act as a technical counterpart to senior customer architects.
  • Incorporate customer learnings rapidly into device concepts and platform improvements.
  • Partner with gfLabs photonics, silicon photonics development, fab, and foundry teams to align design with manufacturing, yield, reliability, and scalability.
  • Drive alignment across device design, process technology, packaging, and test.
  • Track industry trends, standards, and competitive developments; evaluate external innovations for technology insertion.
  • Mentor and support junior architects and engineers.
  • Perform work in compliance with Environmental, Health, Safety & Security programs.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and professional capabilities for this role.

  • Deep expertise in photonic devices and integrated photonics with strong system-level understanding.
  • Experience across device, system, and manufacturing domains in a product-driven environment.
  • Proven ability to engage credibly with customers, partners, and executive stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated track record of translating advanced technology concepts into product-relevant outcomes on aggressive timelines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and to travel as needed.

Education Requirements

Advanced degree required; PhD strongly preferred in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
