2027 Undergrad Compiler Engineering Intern / Co-op
Role Summary
Work on a P4 language compiler targeting AMD domain-specific ASICs. Contribute to implementation, integration, and testing of compiler components based on open-source frameworks (e.g., LLVM, P4C), collaborate with ASIC engineers and compiler users, and receive mentorship from senior engineers. This is a full-time co-op/internship within AMD's compiler and ASIC engineering teams.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for undergraduate students; no prior professional years required. Position is intended for currently enrolled undergraduates.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Implement and extend compiler components for the P4 language targeting AMD ASIC architectures.
- Integrate open-source compiler frameworks (e.g., LLVM, P4C) into the build and development pipeline.
- Collaborate with ASIC design teams and compiler customers to ensure hardware/software alignment.
- Develop and maintain tests, CI workflows, and tooling for compiler builds.
- Debug, profile, and improve compiler performance and correctness.
- Work full-time during the co-op/intern term and follow the team's onsite or hybrid schedule.
Requirements
Minimum qualifications and preferred skills.
- Proficient in object-oriented programming; strong preference for C++.
- Coursework or hands-on experience in compilers, programming languages, and data structures.
- Ability to work effectively on distributed teams and communicate with cross-functional partners.
- Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) for the specified co-op/internship term and onsite/hybrid in the San Jose / Santa Clara area.
- This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship; candidates must be authorized to work without sponsorship.
- Nice-to-have: familiarity with GitHub, CI/CD practices, and open-source compiler tooling.
Education Requirements
Currently enrolled in a U.S.-based university Bachelor's program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; undergraduate status required for this position.
