2027 PhD Research Engineering Intern/Co-op

Role Summary

AMD Research seeks a PhD-level research engineering intern/co-op to work on hardware and software technologies for next-generation computing platforms. The role involves prototype development, performance evaluation, and collaboration with research and product teams.

Placement is within AMD Research and contributions may influence product roadmaps.

Experience Level

Entry-level β€” internship/co-op for PhD students (academic-level research experience expected).

Responsibilities

The intern will be assigned hands-on tasks to support research and product development. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, and test hardware/software prototypes (RTL, firmware, software).
  • Develop and run experiments to evaluate performance, efficiency, and correctness.
  • Work with FPGA/ASIC flows for prototyping and verification.
  • Integrate and benchmark ML frameworks and accelerators (training/inference).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and document research outcomes.

Requirements

Key skills and conditions for candidates.

  • Proficiency in C/C++, Python; experience with Verilog/SystemVerilog and RTL flows is highly desirable.
  • Experience with FPGA deployment, RTL design and verification, or ASIC flows.
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and GPU-based training or accelerator integration.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, data center networking, or high-performance computing is a plus.
  • Strong research background demonstrated by publications or project experience in computing systems, networking, hardware/software co-design, or machine learning.
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) for the duration of the co-op/intern term in a hybrid or onsite structure.
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a U.S.-based PhD program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. Candidates with equivalent research experience and relevant publications may also be considered.
