2027 Masters Compiler Engineering Intern / Co-op

Role Summary

Work on a P4 compiler implementation targeting AMD domain-specific ASICs. The role is an on-site or hybrid full-time (40 hrs/week) internship/co-op in AMD's compiler engineering team collaborating with ASIC designers and customers to build, test, and maintain compiler toolchains based on LLVM and P4C.

Entry-level internship / co-op. Intended for students enrolled in a graduate program (Master's); student status and full-time availability during the assigned term are required.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities during the internship/co-op term include:

  • Develop and extend a P4 compiler backend targeting AMD ASIC architectures.
  • Work with and modify open-source components (e.g., LLVM, P4C) and integrate them into the internal toolchain.
  • Collaborate with ASIC architects and compiler customers to define and implement target-specific features.
  • Implement and maintain tests, CI pipelines, and build infrastructure for the compiler.
  • Debug correctness and performance issues and participate in code reviews and documentation.
  • Deliver project milestones with guidance from senior engineers and mentors.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications and preferred skills.

  • Must-have: Proficiency in object-oriented languages; strong preference for C++.
  • Must-have: Coursework or practical experience in compilers, data structures, and programming languages.
  • Must-have: Ability to work full time (40 hours/week) for the internship/co-op term and participate onsite or in a hybrid model in San Jose or Santa Clara, CA.
  • Must-have: Ability to work in a geographically dispersed team and collaborate across engineering groups.
  • Must-have: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship; applicants must have work authorization that does not require employer sponsorship.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with LLVM, P4C, ASIC toolchains, GitHub workflows, and CI/CD practices.

Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a US-based Master's program (MS) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. Enrollment during the internship/co-op term is required. The posting specifies no visa sponsorship.
