Job Title
System Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for end-to-end system engineering and product design for optical sensor applications, integrating optical, mechanical, firmware and ASIC/software elements. Work includes concept development, specification, validation, and production readiness for industrial optical sensing and communication products.
Experience Level
Mid-level β the role expects experienced professionals (posting specifies 5+ years of related optoelectronic R&D experience).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include technical system design, hands-on validation, and cross-functional coordination.
- Lead product design from sensor physics through optical/mechanical integration and application firmware.
- System engineering for optical sensor applications (e.g., Time-of-Flight / LiDAR, spectrometers, detector technologies).
- Model sensor physics (active/passive optics) and develop signal-processing algorithms.
- Define system specifications from customer requirements.
- Manage projects: define workpackages, plan time and budget, and provide regular status reporting.
- Plan and execute validation and qualification: electrical and optical characterization, test concepts, and scalable test infrastructure.
- Bridge high-level interdisciplinary architectures with detailed ASIC and software functionality definitions.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to define production processes and support contract manufacturers.
- Prepare product documentation, technical specifications, and application notes.
- Contribute to the company patent portfolio through technical innovation.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; brief distinction of nice-to-have items follows.
- Minimum 5+ years of related experience in optoelectronic industrial R&D.
- Strong background in optical semiconductor design, sensor physics, processing and production.
- Experience in sensor system design, including software algorithm definition, implementation, and test.
- Expertise in embedded systems and/or IC design and testing.
- Hands-on laboratory experience in prototyping and electrical/optical characterization.
- Proficiency with scripting and programming to automate measurements (e.g., Python) and/or C++, C#.
- Experience with structured project management methodologies and cross-functional teamwork.
- English fluency (written and verbal); willingness to learn German.
- Nice-to-have: experience with ToF/LiDAR/spectrometers, GUI application development for lab testing, and prior contributions to patents or production process definition.
Education Requirements
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Information Technology with a focus on optical semiconductors, sensors, or optical transceivers is specified.
