Staff Memory Design Engineer
SynopsysJob Title
Staff Memory Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver embedded CMOS memory IP (single-/dual-port SRAM, register files, ROM) for Synopsys' IP portfolio. Own memory block architecture, transistor-level circuit implementation, layout planning, verification, and integration with compiler/EDA flows through tapeout.
This role requires hands-on circuit and layout expertise and technical leadership to drive memory designs from concept to high-volume production.
Experience Level
Senior-level (Staff). The role expects an experienced engineer with a proven track record owning memory design projects and mentoring junior engineers.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include designing memory circuits and guiding them through physical implementation and verification.
- Design and develop embedded memories (single-port SRAM, dual-port SRAM, register files, ROM) for IP products.
- Own circuit architecture and transistor-level implementation for high-speed, low-power, or high-density configurations.
- Perform schematic entry, SPICE simulation, layout planning, and supervise physical layout through final verification.
- Define bitcells and layout rules; drive closure of parasitic extraction and layout verification with physical design teams.
- Interface with CAD teams to integrate designs into compiler automation flows and produce EDA models.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers to define verification flows for timing, power, and functionality.
- Lead technical aspects of memory design projects and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and hands-on experience.
- Deep hands-on experience with CMOS memory circuit design (SRAM, register files, ROM).
- Proficiency with SPICE-based circuit simulators such as HSPICE or Spectre.
- Strong understanding of memory layout design, parasitic extraction, and layout verification tools (e.g., Calibre, Assura).
- Scripting ability in C-Shell, Perl, or similar for design automation tasks.
- Proven ability to lead technical projects and mentor junior engineers.
- Ability to collaborate with layout, CAD, and frontend teams and communicate circuit-level tradeoffs clearly.
- Nice-to-have: experience with C++ or JavaScript; experience with memory compiler flows, EDA model generation, or design automation.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related technical field.
