Job Title
Staff Engineer, TEM
Role Summary
This role is part of the YE lab within Technology Development at Micron's Singapore site. The engineer will operate and advance transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization methods to support process development and device integration for next-generation memory technologies.
The position involves close collaboration with process and integration engineers, data scientists, and TEM specialists to deliver atomic-scale structural and chemical analysis that informs semiconductor process decisions.
Experience Level
Senior (Staff level). Specific years of experience not stated; placement at a corresponding engineer level will depend on prior experience and education.
Responsibilities
Core responsibilities focus on TEM-based characterization, method development, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Perform TEM analysis for microstructure and chemical characterization using electron diffraction, EDS, and EELS.
- Develop and apply advanced TEM techniques to solve complex process challenges and support technology development projects.
- Innovate and implement technical solutions for atomic-scale device characterization to accelerate learning cycles.
- Collaborate with multi-functional teams to correlate structural and chemical TEM data with processing, modeling, and device performance.
- Build and optimize DigitalMicrograph (DM) scripts and related tools to improve data collection and processing efficiency.
- Lead technology roadmap initiatives with instrument vendors, industry partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain and improve lab procedures and safety practices.
- Provide detailed pass-down information to facilitate shift transitions.
Requirements
Key technical skills and experience required or strongly preferred.
-
Must-have: Extensive hands-on TEM materials characterization experience, including EDS and EELS; grain size and strain analysis (e.g., precession electron diffraction).
-
Must-have: Proficiency in scripting with DigitalMicrograph and programming in Python for data processing and automation.
-
Must-have: Strong problem-solving skills and practical experience applying TEM results to semiconductor process development.
-
Must-have: Background knowledge in thermodynamics, kinetics, crystallography, and diffraction relevant to materials analysis.
-
Must-have: Effective communication and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with advanced TEM techniques such as electron holography, tomography, ptychography, and NanoMegas applications.
Education Requirements
PhD or equivalent experience in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field; equivalent practical experience is acceptable. (This posting specifies PhD or equivalent experience as the education expectation.)
