Job Title
Staff Engineer, Firmware and Product Test Engineering
Role Summary
Lead validation strategy and verification for enterprise SSD firmware on the Firmware & Product Test (FPT) team. Architect scalable test frameworks and AI/ML-driven validation methods and own end-to-end verification of NVMe front-end features across simulation, FPGA, and prototype hardware.
Act as a technical authority for firmware validation, mentor engineers, influence firmware architecture decisions, and define the strategic direction for test infrastructure and tooling.
Experience Level
Senior; typical experience guidance: roughly 8+ years with a Bachelor's, 6+ years with a Master's, or 4+ years with a PhD (experience guidance only).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include leading firmware verification, building scalable test frameworks, and applying ML to testing.
- Define and execute verification strategies for customer specifications and NVMe protocols; validate front-end features (e.g., SMART, Trim, Get Log Page, OCP) across product lines.
- Architect grey-box, white-box, and black-box test frameworks and establish organizational standards for firmware quality.
- Lead root-cause analysis for field and regression failures; standardize debug methodologies and knowledge-sharing practices.
- Own the test infrastructure roadmap, including automation frameworks, CI/CD integration, and reporting dashboards; influence tooling decisions.
- Design and deploy AI/ML solutions for test optimization, failure triage, predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and test prioritization.
- Lead code reviews, define test coverage standards, and drive continuous improvements in code quality and test effectiveness.
- Present technical findings, risk assessments, and recommendations to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and foster a culture of engineering excellence.
- Collaborate with firmware architects, product managers, and customers to define testability requirements and influence firmware design.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience, followed by desirable qualifications.
Must-have:
- Expert-level Python, including NumPy, pandas, and scikit-learn; proven track record building production-quality automation frameworks.
- Proven expertise in test architecture, automation strategy, and validation methodologies for complex firmware.
- Experience applying ML models to production problems for test optimization or failure analysis (designing, training, and deploying models).
- Demonstrated skill in root-cause analysis and debugging of field and regression failures; ability to establish systematic debug practices.
- Experience owning or influencing test infrastructure, CI/CD integration, and automation tooling decisions.
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineers.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, and MLOps practices.
- Background in embedded systems, firmware architecture, and hardware-software interfaces.
- Working knowledge of storage standards (NVMe, PCIe, OCP) and NAND flash/SSD firmware validation methodologies.
- Familiarity with Rust or C for firmware code comprehension; Linux/Windows system administration; Git/CI/CD pipelines.
- Contributions to open-source projects, patents, or published technical work; experience leading small teams.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's (approx. 8+ years experience), Master's (approx. 6+ years), or PhD (approx. 4+ years) in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience.
