Job Title
Sr Principal RF/Electrical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Lead electrical design and development for high-power RF/mmWave amplifier products in the Defense & Aerospace High-Power RF (HPRF) product group. The role focuses on integrating MMICs, developing multi-stage amplifier modules, performing EM simulation and lab verification, and driving designs through development, qualification and production.
This position supports U.S. government contracts and is restricted to U.S. Persons. The role is based in Richardson, TX or Newbury Park, CA.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The posting specifies senior experience requirements (typically 10+ years in relevant RF/EM simulation and design; specific years vary by degree).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include design, integration, simulation, testing and lifecycle support for high-power RF amplifiers:
- Create detailed 3D EM models (HFSS/CST) of multi-stage high-gain, high-power solid-state amplifiers, including channelized or enclosed cavities.
- Integrate MMICs into housings and assemblies for high-power RF solutions; develop cascaded MMIC modules using 2.5D/3D EM tools.
- Design PCB-level power management and analog circuits for MMIC biasing and health monitoring.
- Perform product checkout, optimization, design verification testing (DVT), and present DVT analysis to internal/external customers.
- Support products through concept/feasibility, development, qualification, and production lifecycle stages.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools and constraints for successful candidates:
- Expert-level experience with Ku-band and Ka-band RF sub-assemblies and microwave engineering (s-parameters, impedance matching, cavity modeling, resonance management).
- Expertise in system budgeting: RF link budgets, power budgets, and thermal dissipation budgeting.
- Extensive experience with 3D EM simulation tools (HFSS and/or CST); familiarity with ADS, Microwave Office (MWO), or Cadence circuit simulators.
- Knowledge of semiconductor RF/power packaging, materials, assembly processes for defense electronic assemblies and sub-assemblies.
- Familiarity with PCB and mechanical assembly considerations; hands-on experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
- Hands-on lab experience with RF measurement equipment (network/spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, oscilloscopes).
- Proven ability to serve as a design authority: produce comprehensive documentation, participate in design reviews, and analyze test data to ensure quality.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for summarizing technical results.
- Must be a U.S. Person; this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship and requires work on U.S. government contracts.
Education Requirements
BS in Electrical Engineering with 15+ years' experience; MS in Electrical Engineering (RF/Microwave focus) with 13+ years' experience; PhD in Electrical Engineering (RF/Microwave focus) with 10+ years' experience. (Degrees and the corresponding experience ranges are listed in the posting.)
