Sr/Principal Application Engineer, Industrial & Power
Role Summary
The Sr/Principal Application Engineer will design, develop, and validate reference designs and application boards focused on switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), turning device capabilities into production-ready hardware. This role bridges product development and customers through hands-on validation, technical expertise, and direct customer engagement.
Works cross-functionally with R&D, Marketing, and system architects to accelerate customer adoption and reduce time-to-market.
Experience Level
Senior β 5β8 years of experience in application engineering, hardware design, or power electronics.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and develop reference designs, evaluation boards, and application hardware using discrete, analog, and power ICs.
- Create schematics, select components, and collaborate on PCB layout to optimize performance, thermal management, reliability, and cost.
- Perform electrical, thermal, and system-level validation: efficiency analysis, switching characterization, transient response testing, thermal profiling, and EMI/EMC pre-compliance evaluation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges related to hardware designs and applications.
- Support customers and sales through design-in activities, technical consultations, and application-focused problem solving.
- Represent the company at customer meetings, workshops, and industry events.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation: application notes, design guides, simulation models, and user content.
- Collaborate with Marketing, R&D, and system architects to translate customer insights into product roadmap inputs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- 5β8 years in application engineering, hardware design, or power electronics.
- Proven experience developing reference designs, evaluation boards, or power electronics hardware solutions.
- Deep knowledge of SMPS topologies (buck, boost, flyback, LLC, multilevel converters, paralleling, high/low-voltage architectures).
- Experience with wide-bandgap technologies and power conversion systems.
- Hands-on PCB design and layout experience (Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar).
- Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools (MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, PLECS), thermal analysis, and EMC methodologies.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, system-level problem-solving, and technical writing skills; business-fluent English.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience in datacenter power applications.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required; Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) preferred.
