Job Title

Silicon Firmware Development Engineer

Role Summary

Develop and maintain low-level firmware (UEFI/BIOS) and software that interfaces directly with silicon and platform hardware. Work within a cross-functional team in Intel's Data Center Group to design, implement, test, and validate firmware components that enable higher-level software and system functionality.

Role focuses on interface design, secure firmware development practices, debugging, and participation in design and code reviews to meet industry standards.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical guidance: 3+ years of firmware or software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 2+ years with a Master's degree.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include firmware development, verification, and cross-team collaboration.

  • Develop and maintain UEFI/BIOS reference code and firmware that interfaces with hardware.
  • Design and implement interfaces to abstract low-level hardware functionality for higher-level software.
  • Perform design and code reviews to ensure quality and adherence to standards (e.g., UEFI, ACPI, PCIe).
  • Test, validate, and debug firmware and platform implementations to ensure robustness and security.
  • Apply secure code development practices and follow firmware lifecycle methodologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve issues and meet project goals.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and competencies, plus preferred skills.

  • Must-have: Proficiency in C programming and strong debugging/problem-solving skills.
  • Must-have: Solid understanding of computer architecture and embedded/low-level software concepts.
  • Must-have: Experience with secure code development practices and firmware lifecycle processes.
  • Must-have: Experience debugging firmware and system-level issues.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with Intel processor architecture, UEFI internals (EDK/Tiano), legacy BIOS platforms (Phoenix/AMI), and x86 assembly.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with industry specifications and interfaces such as PCI, ACPI, DDR, IPMI, SMBIOS; Simics; ITP tool for low-level debugging.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with PC architecture, PC assembly/building, and open-source development methodologies.
  • Nice-to-have: Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work across diverse teams.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's (BS) degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is required in the posting. Experience guidance: 3+ years of firmware or software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 2+ years with a Master's degree. No certifications were specified.
