Job Title

Senior Staff Engineer, Physical Design

Role Summary

Lead block- and subsystem-level physical implementation and closure for complex hierarchical SoCs at advanced nodes. Work with SoC-level teams to align clocking, floorplanning intent, and integration requirements without owning SoC-level execution.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Candidate should have 10+ years of experience in physical design, with significant subsystem-level closure experience for complex SoCs.

Responsibilities

Deliver reliable subsystem/block physical closure and improve closure methodologies and automation.

  • Lead timing closure, congestion mitigation, power integrity, and block/subsystem physical implementation quality.
  • Align subsystem clocking domains, floorplanning intent, and integration needs with SoC teams.
  • Develop and scale closure methodologies, flows, and automation to improve predictability and efficiency.
  • Mentor and guide physical design engineers on best practices and methodology adoption.
  • Collaborate with RTL, STA, power, verification, and backend teams to ensure smooth handoffs and robust closure.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate physical design risks and coordinate solutions with SoC teams.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.

  • 10+ years of physical design experience focused on subsystem/block-level closure for hierarchical SoCs.
  • Expertise in timing closure, constraints, congestion analysis/resolution, and power-aware physical implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of clocking methodologies: clock domain partitioning, clock tree architecture, skew management, and clock gating (subsystem-level integration).
  • Hands-on experience with industry tools such as Synopsys ICC2/Fusion Compiler/PrimeTime and Cadence Innovus/Tempus/Certus; signoff and analysis platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Tcl, Python, and/or Perl).
  • Experience collaborating across timing, power, clocking, verification, and backend teams; strong communication skills.
  • Understanding of low-power design techniques and power-aware implementation methodologies.

Education Requirements

B.Tech or M.Tech in Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
