Job Title

Senior Engineering Technician

Role Summary

Responsible for modifying PCBs, building and maintaining test systems, and performing power and performance measurements for CPU platform development within the CPU design/performance analysis team in Cambridge. Works with lab management to manage equipment, calibration and test schedules.

The role supports delivery of high-performance, energy-efficient CPU cores by enabling accurate power and performance characterisation across consumer and embedded platforms.

Experience Level

Senior; typically 5+ years of relevant experience in electrical/electronic engineering, electronics or RF testing in a lab environment.

Responsibilities

Typical day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Modify PCBs (board rework, add current sense resistors) to enable detailed power measurements.
  • Build, assemble and maintain electronic/electro-mechanical test systems and consumer platforms for measurement.
  • Run workloads to exercise systems while monitoring power and performance; plan and schedule testing.
  • Manage test equipment, calibration and inventory in coordination with Lab Management.
  • Follow ESD and COSHH procedures and support lab safety and compliance.
  • Support in-house board manufacturing team with modifications and testing as required.

Requirements

Essential skills and attributes:

  • Proven excellence in soldering and PCB assembly rework skills, especially SMT.
  • Practical experience working in a lab environment and using standard test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes).
  • Bench-level mechanical assembly and ability to build/assemble test fixtures.
  • Able to read and interpret circuit diagrams; strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and able to document and communicate test results in English.
  • Physically able to transport and install equipment weighing at least 25 lbs frequently.

Desirable:

  • Experience with ESD handling procedures and test automation.
  • Advanced soldering techniques (chip reflow) and experience with DAQs.
  • Basic Python programming skills.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor industry and power/performance characterisation.

Education Requirements

Preferred HNC or equivalent, or NVQ Level 3. The posting also lists acceptable alternatives: Bachelor's degree; Associate's degree plus 1+ year relevant experience; or High School Diploma/equivalent plus 2+ years relevant experience. Fields include electrical/electronic engineering, electronics, RF testing or related technical disciplines; equivalent practical experience is acceptable.
