Job Title
Senior Engineer - SW Design (RAIL)
Role Summary
Develop and maintain low-level embedded software for the RAIL SDK to enable reliable, power-efficient wireless products on Silicon Labs devices. Collaborate with silicon, hardware, firmware, systems, and test teams to deliver features from design through verification, release, and long-term support.
Work focuses on resource-constrained, real-time systems and optimizing performance, power, and reliability for IoT applications.
Experience Level
Senior-level — typically 5+ years of professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for low-power wireless microcontrollers and SDKs.
- Support hardware features across the IC lifecycle: design, pre-silicon verification, post-silicon bring-up, release, and long-term maintenance.
- Develop and enhance low-level components such as device drivers, initialization/startup code, timing-sensitive system software, and radio control features.
- Optimize software for performance, reliability, power efficiency, and memory/CPU utilization in real-time environments.
- Debug complex issues across software, firmware, hardware, and system boundaries using lab tools and debuggers.
- Collaborate with product, silicon, hardware, and test teams on requirements, design reviews, and device bring-up.
- Contribute to automated test, validation, and development tooling to improve product quality and engineering efficiency.
- Participate in code and design reviews and mentor other engineers.
Requirements
Must-have:
- 5+ years of embedded software/firmware development experience.
- Strong programming skills in Embedded C and/or C++.
- Experience developing software for microcontrollers in resource-constrained, real-time (bare-metal or RTOS) environments.
- Hands-on debugging at the hardware/software boundary using tools such as debuggers, JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
- Experience with low-level embedded software: device drivers, interrupts, peripheral interfaces, and timing-critical code.
- Proven ability to take features from design through implementation, test, and release.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with wireless technologies (Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, Thread, Wi‑Fi, or proprietary radios) and PHY/MAC or radio control software.
- Experience optimizing for low power, performance, and reliability; silicon bring-up or hardware validation experience.
- Familiarity with common embedded interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, DMA, timers) and multi-core concurrency challenges.
- Experience with Python for tooling/automation, CI/validation frameworks, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or assembly on ARM/RISC‑V.
- Practical use of AI-assisted development tools for prototyping, test development, or automation, with sound engineering judgment.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
