Job Title

Senior Compiler Engineer - Backend GPU

Role Summary

Senior engineer on the GPU backend compiler team responsible for designing and implementing an LLVM-based JIT compiler that emits high-performance machine code for NVIDIA GPUs. Work spans code generation, optimization passes, and close collaboration with hardware and application teams.

Focus areas include reducing compilation time, improving generated-code performance, and adapting modern compiler technologies to new GPU architectures. Base salary range: 152,000 USD - 241,500 USD.

Experience Level

Senior. Typical experience: 4+ years in compiler development, including 3+ years working with LLVM code generation.

Responsibilities

Own design and implementation of backend components and optimizations for an LLVM-based GPU JIT compiler. Collaborate with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to resolve issues and deliver production-quality compiler features.

  • Design and implement an LLVM-based backend JIT targeting NVIDIA GPUs.
  • Develop new compiler passes and optimizations to meet performance and compilation-time targets.
  • Work with hardware and application teams to identify and fix performance and correctness issues.
  • Apply and adapt modern compiler techniques to produce robust, maintainable compiler code and tools.
  • Influence and contribute to compiler requirements for future GPU architectures.

Requirements

Core technical skills and experience required to perform the role.

  • Must-have:
    • 4+ years of compiler development experience, including 3+ years focused on LLVM code generation.
    • Expertise in LLVM code generation: instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, and Machine IR (MIR).
    • Proficient in compiler design and performance analysis tools.
    • Strong C++ programming skills applied to compiler and development frameworks.
    • Solid software engineering practices for building robust, maintainable systems.
    • Good communication and documentation skills; self-motivated and able to work across teams.
  • Nice-to-have:
    • Experience developing compiler optimizations and code generation specifically for GPUs.
    • Experience developing CUDA, DirectX, OpenGL, or Vulkan applications.
    • Proven ability to lead and influence engineering teams.

Education Requirements

B.S. or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Masters or PhD preferred; equivalent industry experience acceptable.
