Job Title

RTL Design Engineer

Role Summary

Design and implement register-transfer level (RTL) logic for CPU blocks to be integrated into SoC designs. Work on RTL coding, simulation, optimization, and documentation while collaborating with architecture, verification, and SoC integration teams.

Assigned to the Silicon and Platform Engineering Group; role focuses on delivering CPU IP blocks meeting power, performance, area, and timing targets.

Experience Level

Entry-level. Candidates typically have ~2+ years of relevant experience with undergraduate or graduate STEM education as described in Education Requirements.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include design, verification support, and integration tasks:

  • Develop RTL for CPU features and functional units; perform RTL coding in Verilog/SystemVerilog or VHDL.
  • Create and run simulations to validate functionality and performance.
  • Participate in defining microarchitecture and implement features per micro-architectural specifications.
  • Optimize logic to meet power, performance, area, and timing goals for physical implementation.
  • Review verification plans and collaborate to resolve failing RTL tests and correctness issues.
  • Document micro-architectural specifications and implementation details.
  • Support SoC integration teams and customers to ensure high-quality CPU block integration.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • Experience with digital design and RTL coding using Verilog/SystemVerilog and/or VHDL.
  • Experience with synthesis tools such as Synopsys Design Compiler or Cadence Genus.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, Perl, TCL) for automation and flows.
  • Understanding of microprocessor concepts, computer architecture, and basic logic design.
  • Ability to analyze and optimize designs for timing and implementation constraints.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with advanced verification methodologies (UVM/OVM) and simulation tools (ModelSim, VCS, Xcelium).
  • Knowledge of low-power design techniques and physical design constraints/timing closure.
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, Perforce).

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other STEM field with at least 2+ years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering. The posting also accepts equivalent practical experience in lieu of formal degree requirements. Relevant coursework or experience expected in basic logic design, microprocessors, computer architecture, digital design/RTL coding, HDL (Verilog/SystemVerilog/VHDL), synthesis tools, and scripting languages.
