Job Title

RTL Design Engineer

Role Summary

Design and implement register-transfer-level (RTL) logic for CPU IP targeted for SoC integration. Work on RTL coding, simulation, microarchitecture definition, and optimization to meet power, performance, area, and timing goals while ensuring design integrity for physical implementation.

Collaborate with verification, physical-design, and customer integration teams; document micro-architectural specifications and support integration of the CPU block into full-chip designs.

Experience Level

Mid-level — role expects professional experience (posting indicates ~2+ years when holding a Bachelor's degree; Master's degree also referenced).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop RTL logic, write RTL code, and perform simulation for CPU features and blocks.
  • Generate cell libraries, functional units, and CPU IP blocks for integration into full-chip designs.
  • Participate in architecture and microarchitecture definition and document micro-architectural specifications (MAS).
  • Optimize logic and RTL to meet power, performance, area, and timing requirements and ensure readiness for physical implementation.
  • Review verification plans and results to ensure features are correctly verified; debug and resolve failing RTL tests.
  • Support SoC customers and integration teams to achieve high-quality CPU block integration.

Requirements

Key practical skills and responsibilities expected on the job (degree/coursework items summarized separately below):

  • Proven experience delivering RTL for CPU or complex digital blocks and working across RTL-to-implementation flows.
  • Ability to analyze failing RTL tests, implement corrective fixes, and collaborate with verification teams.
  • Experience optimizing designs for timing, area, and power trade-offs and ensuring physical implementation integrity.
  • Experience documenting micro-architectural specifications and communicating design intent to cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with advanced verification methodologies (UVM, OVM).
  • Knowledge of low-power design techniques.
  • Understanding of physical design constraints and timing closure.
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, Perforce) and industry simulation tools (ModelSim, VCS, Xcelium).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or another STEM field with at least 2+ years of relevant experience, OR a Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering. The posting also references coursework or experience in Basic Logic Design, Microprocessors, Computer Architecture, Digital design and RTL coding, Verilog/SystemVerilog and/or VHDL, synthesis tools (e.g., Design Compiler, Genus), and scripting languages (Python, Perl, TCL).
