Job Title
Research Scientist
Role Summary
Join the Advanced Development group within KLA's Optical Metrology Division to propose and validate novel optical metrology concepts. Work involves designing and conducting complex laboratory experiments, deriving and validating theoretical models, and translating research results into recommendations for next-generation products.
Work is multidisciplinary, collaborating with algorithm, systems, and hardware teams to move concepts from proof-of-concept toward product maturity.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Requires 5+ years of research experience in industry or academia (post-doc experience included); 8+ years is an advantage.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Propose novel concepts and develop solutions for optical metrology challenges.
- Design, build, and run complex optical experiments to demonstrate proof-of-concept.
- Derive theoretical models, validate them experimentally, and iterate between theory and experiment.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data rigorously.
- Formulate conclusions and recommendations to guide product roadmap and next-generation systems.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (algorithms, systems, hardware, etc.).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Demonstrated, hands-on experimental track record: designing and building optical setups and running complex experiments.
- Deep theoretical knowledge in optics and light–matter interaction.
- Strong simulation and modeling skills to support experimental design and analysis.
- Proven scientific record (peer-reviewed publications and/or patents).
- Excellent written and verbal scientific communication skills.
- Independent, creative thinker with strong scientific rigor and ability to close the loop between model and measurement.
- Team player comfortable in a multidisciplinary R&D environment.
- Preferred: experience transitioning research concepts from lab demonstrations toward product-level maturity; background in high-precision optical measurement or related experimental physics domains.
Education Requirements
PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a strong experimental thesis is required.
