Principal SSD Systems Design Engineer

Role Summary

As a Principal SSD Systems Design Engineer on Micron's SSD Product Development Team, you will lead system architecture, guide cross-functional execution from concept to high-volume manufacturing, and mentor engineering talent. The role influences product direction across firmware, hardware, and system-level domains and uses data-driven methods to resolve technical tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include system design leadership, cross-domain debugging, characterization, and technical stakeholder engagement.

  • Lead system-level design definition and design reviews for SSD products, aligning architecture with roadmap and customer requirements.
  • Drive resolution of complex, multi-domain technical issues across firmware, hardware, and systems using structured, data-driven debug approaches.
  • Define and implement system-level characterization strategies for power, thermal, performance, and reliability.
  • Serve as a primary technical interface for executive partners, customers, and global engineering teams.
  • Lead lessons-learned initiatives and continuous improvement in SSD development methodologies.
  • Mentor engineers and shape technical direction through leadership and influence.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • Deep expertise in SSD architecture including controller design, FTL, wear-leveling, and NAND lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge of PCIe and NVMe protocols and performance optimization.
  • Experience in system-level design, debug, and characterization across development phases.
  • Hands-on expertise with lab instrumentation and board-level debug.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with SSD ASICs, firmware integration, and system-level co-design.
  • Strong programming skills for automation (Python, C++, Bash).
  • Experience with power and thermal optimization at system level.
  • Experience leading multi-functional teams and working directly with customers.

Education Requirements

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred: advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
