Principal Engineer, NPU Architect
Role Summary
The Principal NPU Hardware Architect will drive the architectural definition and hardware implementation of high-performance Neural Processing Units (NPUs) targeted for microcontrollers and microprocessors focused on Automotive high-performance computing. This hardware-oriented role requires a deep understanding of the silicon lifecycle and a strong background in hardware-software co-design.
Experience Level
Senior level with 10 to 15 years of experience in AI accelerator, NPU, or GPU hardware architecture and RTL design.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities for this role include:
- Defining end-to-end NPU micro-architecture, including tensor/matrix engines and specialized functional units.
- Collaborating with compiler and software teams on instruction sets and hardware-aware optimizations.
- Architecting hardware-assisted virtualization features for secure resource sharing.
- Designing high-bandwidth bus fabrics and optimizing DMA controllers for AI workloads.
- Leading the definition of SoC infrastructure elements and power management strategies.
- Developing models to validate architectural choices and support software development.
- Overseeing the transition from architectural specifications to RTL.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical or Computer Engineering; PhD is desirable.
- 12+ years of relevant experience in AI accelerator or NPU architecture.
- Deep knowledge of deep learning primitives and their hardware mapping.
- Strong understanding of compiler backends.
- Proven track record with SoC protocols and system integration.
- Expertise in SystemC/TLM or C++ for performance modeling.
- Ability to mentor junior designers and influence cross-functional roadmaps.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; PhD desirable.
