Principal Engineer AI SDK

Role Summary

MIPS by GlobalFoundries seeks a senior individual-contributor engineer to lead architecture and delivery of a Linux-based AI SDK for RISC-V AI hardware. The role owns end-to-end software for embedded AI stacks: board support, kernel drivers, tooling, and framework integration.

This position requires cross-functional technical leadership across firmware, SoC hardware teams, and ML framework/inference toolchain teams to bring products from prototype to production.

Experience Level

Senior — typically 10+ years of relevant software engineering or systems experience; significant technical leadership and cross-functional influence expected.

Responsibilities

Accountabilities for the role include:

• Define and drive architecture for a Linux-based AI SDK covering BSP, kernel drivers, middleware, and developer tooling.
• Lead firmware and OS bring-up for embedded RISC-V AI platforms and coordinate SoC validation activities.
• Optimize neural-network execution and acceleration across CPU, memory subsystems, and dedicated accelerators.
• Integrate and maintain production interfaces to ML frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, system observability, and performance-regression testing for the SDK.
• Collaborate with hardware architects, firmware, and compiler teams to close performance and power targets.
• Produce clear technical documentation and communicate design tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

Key qualifications and skills required for success.

• Deep expertise in CPU and SoC architecture, memory hierarchies, and power/thermal considerations as they affect AI workloads.
• Strong Linux systems and kernel-driver experience; experience building BSPs and platform bring-up tools.
• Proven experience developing and shipping SDKs or middleware for embedded systems.
• Familiarity with AI compiler and runtime toolchains (examples: MLIR-based toolchains, IREE, TVM, TFLite) and ability to work with compiler/IR teams.
• Proven experience building CI/CD systems, automated testing frameworks, and observability for system-level software.
• Track record of performance optimization for ML inference workloads and profiling on limited-resource targets.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration, written communication, and ability to drive technical consensus without direct authority.
• Nice-to-have: experience with RISC-V platforms, PyTorch/TF integration internals, and open-source contributions to relevant projects.

Education Requirements

BS or MS (preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience. The role expects senior-level experience (10+ years) in software engineering, hardware architecture, Linux SDKs, ML systems, or related domains.
