Job Title
Physical Design Methodology Engineer
Role Summary
Work on physical design methodology and implementation flows for GPUs, CPUs, and SoCs with focus on Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) and runtime efficiency on advanced process nodes. Collaborate with tool teams and design groups to improve RTL-to-GDS flows, floorplanning, place-and-route, and signoff processes.
Experience Level
Mid-level β minimum 5 years of experience in Physical Design Engineering (per job posting).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include developing and improving physical design flows and methodologies to meet PPA and manufacturability targets.
- Create and enhance place-and-route, floorplanning, and chip assembly workflows.
- Optimize power distribution, clock tree synthesis, and routing to improve PPA and runtime.
- Perform timing, IR/EM, and DRC-related analyses and implement closure strategies.
- Improve RTL-to-GDS flow and automate interventions to address design issues early.
- Work with internal and external partners to extend tools and methodologies for advanced nodes.
- Support power and area optimization using power intent and power-aware simulation data.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Physical Design Engineering.
- Proven track record improving PPA for high-performance and low-power designs on advanced nodes.
- Strong understanding of place, CTS, routing, post-route optimization, and timing closure.
- Knowledge of design rules for advanced nodes and their impact on DRC closure and PPA.
- Familiarity with power intent (e.g., UPF) and use of FSDB/SAIF for power optimization.
- Experience with hierarchical design, pinning, budgeting flows, and power distribution networks.
- Experience with yield/manufacturability practices, EM/IR closure, and thermal considerations.
- Expertise in industry-standard EDA tools for physical design and signoff.
- Proficiency in scripting/programming: TCL, Perl, Python; familiarity with C++ is desirable.
Education Requirements
MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering is specified; equivalent practical experience is explicitly accepted.
