Physical Design Engineer, ML4PD
Role Summary
Contribute to physical design of high-performance AI/ML ASICs from synthesis through tapeout. Work with front-end and physical design teams to optimize floorplanning, timing, power, performance, and area across multiple IP blocks.
This is a hybrid role based out of Austin, TX; Fort Collins, CO; or Santa Clara, CA. Compensation for engineers at Tenstorrent ranges from $100k–$500k total (base plus variable), varying by experience and location.
Experience Level
Mid- to senior-level (mid-career to senior). The posting does not specify an exact years-of-experience requirement.
Responsibilities
Work across the ASIC implementation flow to deliver high-quality physical designs for advanced AI/ML architectures.
- Implement physical design from synthesis through signoff and tapeout.
- Partner with front-end and physical-design engineers on floorplanning, clocking, I/O planning, and timing closure.
- Optimize timing, power (including EM/IR), performance, and area across multiple IPs.
- Develop flows, run experiments, and use data to improve PPA (power, performance, area).
- Automate tasks and build tools/flows to accelerate implementation and signoff.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and conditions for the role.
- Experience with synthesis, place-and-route flows, and physical-design toolchains.
- Familiarity with timing analysis, EM/IR analysis, and power analysis.
- Strong scripting skills (Tcl, Perl, Shell, and/or Python) for automation and flow development.
- Knowledge of low-power techniques such as power gating, multi-Vt, and voltage scaling.
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to achieve timing closure, area improvement, and power optimization.
- Employment contingent on eligibility to access U.S. export-controlled technology; ability to obtain required approvals or appropriate citizenship/permanent residency may be required.
Education Requirements
A BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is listed as the expected educational background.
