Job Title

Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Join the VLSI Physical Design team to implement physical design for NVIDIA GPU and mobile chips. The role focuses on full-chip physical implementation tasks including floorplanning, power/clock distribution, timing optimization, place & route, extraction, and physical verification.

The team works with RTL, DFT and circuit designers to resolve implementation issues, achieve timing and power closure, and validate designs on advanced process nodes.

Experience Level

Mid-level; typically requires 2+ years of relevant physical-design experience.

Responsibilities

Primary duties involve implementing and closing physical designs across multiple stages of the flow and working with cross-functional teams to resolve issues.

  • Participate in full-chip floorplanning, power and clock distribution design, and placement & routing.
  • Perform timing optimization and timing closure for complex designs.
  • Carry out RC extraction, power and signal-integrity analysis, and physical verification.
  • Troubleshoot design and flow issues and apply proactive interventions to meet design targets.
  • Collaborate with RTL, DFT and circuit designers to ensure correct and high-quality physical implementation.

Requirements

Below are the core technical requirements and additional preferred skills.

  • Must-have: Power user of industry EDA tools such as Synopsys (ICC2/FC/PT/STAR-RC) and Cadence (EDI/Innovus/Voltus).
  • Must-have: Practical experience in clock and power distribution, place & route, timing closure, RC extraction, and verification on advanced process nodes.
  • Must-have: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex design and flow issues and work cross-functionally.
  • Must-have: Minimum ~2 years of relevant physical-design experience.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of FinFET technology, circuit design concepts, and package design.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with physical-verification tools such as Synopsys ICV or Mentor/Calibre.
  • Nice-to-have: Scripting proficiency (Perl, Python, TCL) and familiarity with Makefile-based flows.

Education Requirements

Required: BS in Engineering or Science, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred: MS in Engineering or Science.
