Job Title
Optical Engineer, RTP, Test Software Architecture and Optics NPI
Role Summary
Drive optics validation and NPI (new product introduction) for optical transceivers within Meta's Release to Production organization. Combine deep optical-transceiver expertise with Python-based test software architecture to qualify modules from EVT/DVT/PVT through mass production and sustainment.
Experience Level
Senior β requires significant hands-on NPI and development experience (see Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Principal responsibilities include designing test systems, leading NPI programs, and ensuring production readiness of optical platforms.
- Architect, build, and maintain Python-based test software and frameworks for automated qualification of optical transceivers and subsystems (EVT/DVT/PVT/characterization), including instrument drivers, switch/host abstractions, and results pipelines.
- Lead optics NPI programs end-to-end with vendors and ODMs from RFI/RFP through EVT/DVT/PVT to mass production and sustaining.
- Find, debug, and remediate optical hardware failure modes; drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions with vendors and ODMs.
- Stand up and own NPI test stations: integrate modules, switches, and instruments and enable at-scale, lights-out test execution.
- Define test and measurement methodologies for high-speed optical technologies and translate them into reusable, well-tested automation.
- Develop instrument control and automation (BERT, OSA, optical power/wavelength meters, scopes) and CMIS register-level module control.
- Ensure new optical platforms are supported by production and fleet-health tooling; contribute to production-readiness documentation, Best Known Configuration, and Design-for-Test.
- Build robust data capture, storage, and visualization so test and fleet results are trustworthy, queryable, and actionable.
- Provide sustaining support after deployment and refine failure-mode understanding under production workloads.
- Set engineering standards for the test software stack (code review, CI, version control, type checking, documentation) and mentor engineers and technicians.
- Collaborate with software, mechanical, thermal, electrical, signal integrity, FPGA, TPM, and production engineering teams and engage with industry and vendors.
Requirements
Key must-have qualifications and concise list of preferred skills.
-
Must-have: 8+ years in development roles for optical networking hardware with a proven track record of taking new products into volume production.
-
Must-have: Demonstrated experience designing and building production-quality test software in Python (modular frameworks, testing, CI, type hints).
-
Must-have: Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test, lab instrumentation, and test automation.
-
Must-have: Experience leading optical transceiver NPI programs with vendors and/or ODMs.
-
Nice-to-have: Version control and large monorepo workflows; experience with data center network architecture and high-volume manufacturing test flows.
-
Nice-to-have: Data engineering for test and fleet health (schema design, persistence, dashboards, statistical analysis β NumPy, pandas, SQL).
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with optical integration (InP PICs, silicon-photonic PICs, PIC-IC integration) and advanced modulation/coherent systems.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience building instrument-control/test-automation frameworks (SCPI/VISA, PyVISA, vendor APIs) and familiarity with C/C++, MATLAB, or Rust.
-
Nice-to-have: Track record of mentoring engineers, setting technical direction, and transferring test infrastructure to contract manufacturers/ODM factory lines.
-
Nice-to-have: Deep knowledge of pluggable optical transceivers and form factors (QSFP-DD, OSFP, QSFP112) and the CMIS management interface.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field β or equivalent practical experience (the posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience).
