Metrology Engineer
Role Summary
Member of Broadcom's MicroOptics team in the Optical Systems Division based in Charlotte, NC. The role characterizes optical designs and components in a semiconductor cleanroom environment and ensures measurement methods, equipment and processes meet product and production requirements.
The position works closely with R&D, operations, vendors and customers to develop metrology capability and resolve production issues for lenses and optical components used in data centers, lithography and industrial applications.
Experience Level
Mid-level — requires several years of hands-on optical/metrology engineering experience (see Education Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance).
Responsibilities
Core duties focus on developing measurement capability, ensuring equipment stability, and driving yield and quality improvements.
- Develop metrology recipes and measurement procedures using in-house capabilities.
- Design, build and validate test fixtures and data-acquisition systems for custom optics.
- Work with equipment manufacturers and industry experts to create or improve measurement capabilities.
- Recommend and implement equipment and process modifications to improve production efficiency and yields.
- Maintain calibration and qualification of quality-critical equipment and devices.
- Use Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor equipment stability.
- Perform statistical analysis and Design of Experiments (DOE) to identify root causes of yield loss and improve quality.
- Collaborate with process and equipment engineers to resolve production-impacting issues.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and professional competencies required to perform the role.
- Hands-on experience with Coordinate Measuring Microscopes, confocal microscopy, lasers and photodetectors.
- Proficiency with LabVIEW and MATLAB for instrument control and data processing.
- Strong data-analysis skills and experience with JMP or similar statistical/analytical software.
- Practical knowledge of SPC and DOE methodologies for process control and yield improvement.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; demonstrated teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and project-management skills.
- Experience working in a cleanroom/semiconductor manufacturing environment and with production equipment troubleshooting.
- Nice to have: experience developing custom fixtures and DAQ hardware for optical testing; experience with optical lens production for data centers or lithography.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of related experience.
