Job Title

Metrology Engineer

Role Summary

Member of Broadcom's MicroOptics team in the Optical Systems Division based in Charlotte, NC. The role characterizes optical designs and components in a semiconductor cleanroom environment and ensures measurement methods, equipment and processes meet product and production requirements.

The position works closely with R&D, operations, vendors and customers to develop metrology capability and resolve production issues for lenses and optical components used in data centers, lithography and industrial applications.

Experience Level

Mid-level — requires several years of hands-on optical/metrology engineering experience (see Education Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance).

Responsibilities

Core duties focus on developing measurement capability, ensuring equipment stability, and driving yield and quality improvements.

  • Develop metrology recipes and measurement procedures using in-house capabilities.
  • Design, build and validate test fixtures and data-acquisition systems for custom optics.
  • Work with equipment manufacturers and industry experts to create or improve measurement capabilities.
  • Recommend and implement equipment and process modifications to improve production efficiency and yields.
  • Maintain calibration and qualification of quality-critical equipment and devices.
  • Use Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor equipment stability.
  • Perform statistical analysis and Design of Experiments (DOE) to identify root causes of yield loss and improve quality.
  • Collaborate with process and equipment engineers to resolve production-impacting issues.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and professional competencies required to perform the role.

  • Hands-on experience with Coordinate Measuring Microscopes, confocal microscopy, lasers and photodetectors.
  • Proficiency with LabVIEW and MATLAB for instrument control and data processing.
  • Strong data-analysis skills and experience with JMP or similar statistical/analytical software.
  • Practical knowledge of SPC and DOE methodologies for process control and yield improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; demonstrated teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and project-management skills.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom/semiconductor manufacturing environment and with production equipment troubleshooting.
  • Nice to have: experience developing custom fixtures and DAQ hardware for optical testing; experience with optical lens production for data centers or lithography.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of related experience.
