Mask Layout Designer
QualcommJob Title
Mask Layout Designer
Role Summary
Develop block-level layouts of advanced-node custom mixed-signal analog IP for smartphones and other wireless consumer devices. Work within the Mask Layout Design team in the Engineering Services Group and coordinate with engineering teams and layout peers across multiple geographies.
Produce verified, manufacturable layout IP, maintain layout databases, track schedules, and resolve PDK and design issues to meet project milestones.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Qualifications accept candidates with a Bachelor's degree (no specific years), or an Associate's degree plus 2+ years of relevant layout experience, or a High School diploma plus 4+ years of relevant layout experience; typical hires have multiple years of custom-layout experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and implement block-level analog/mixed-signal layouts following device matching, parasitic minimization, isolation, and latch-up mitigation principles.
- Create, verify, and iterate layouts using physical verification tools and flows.
- Maintain layout databases using design-management software and report design status against milestones.
- Identify and troubleshoot PDK and design issues; propose and document fixes.
- Collaborate with Mask Layout Designers and engineering teams across sites (e.g., San Diego, Raleigh, Cork, Bangalore).
- Continuously broaden skills to support advanced-node design requirements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Practical experience designing custom analog, mixed-signal, RF, or digital layouts.
- Proficiency with Cadence VXL and Calibre (or equivalent physical/layout verification tools).
- Strong understanding of analog layout principles: device matching, parasitic control, isolation techniques.
- Experience with layout database and design-management workflows.
- Ability to work independently, solve PDK/design issues, and communicate clearly in an international team.
Nice-to-have:
- PCB layout, board-level design, or test/lab engineering experience.
- Advanced-node fabrication knowledge.
- CAD tooling, automation, or scripting experience to improve layout flows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronic Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Alternatives accepted: Associate's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related field plus 2+ years of relevant layout experience; or High School diploma/equivalent plus 4+ years of relevant layout experience. The posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience.
