Junior Field Applications Engineer, ASIC Design
Role Summary
Provide technical support to customer ASIC design teams using Synopsys physical design tools. Troubleshoot customer flows, reproduce and isolate issues, and work with product/R&D teams to deliver fixes or workarounds that keep tapeout schedules on track.
Part of the Silicon Design & Verification Applications Engineering team; the role is customer-facing and involves documentation, deployments, and internal collaboration.
Experience Level
Entry-level - early career (typically 0β3 years). The role expects around 6β12 months of internship or contractor experience in semiconductor or EDA environments.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include customer support, troubleshooting, and knowledge sharing.
- Provide technical support for Synopsys Physical Design tool flows during ASIC development.
- Analyze design data, tool logs, and flow configurations to isolate root causes.
- Reproduce issues, suggest workarounds, and escalate bugs to product engineering and R&D.
- Respond to customer requests during critical schedules to keep projects on track.
- Participate in deployments and training; document issues and solutions for internal knowledge bases.
- Collaborate with internal teams to improve tools and reference flows based on customer feedback.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience; nice-to-have items noted.
- Minimum 6 months to 1 year of internship or contractor experience in a semiconductor or EDA environment (global or multinational company preferred).
- Solid understanding of physical design flow: placement, routing, timing, and basic optimization techniques.
- Strong foundation in digital circuits and ASIC design flow from RTL to GDSII (technical competence expected; degree details listed below).
- Working knowledge of Unix/Linux environments and basic scripting for automation and debugging.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for customer interactions and technical documentation.
- Ability to reproduce issues from vague descriptions, analyze logs, and manage multiple support cases.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for customer visits, training, and onsite support.
- Nice-to-have: experience with Synopsys tools such as Fusion Compiler, IC Compiler II, PrimeTime, or StarRC.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field is specified.
