FPGA Programming Jobs, Level - Mid-Career

Job Title

FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Design and verify FPGA-based digital systems for safety-critical aerospace and medical device programs. The role focuses on RTL development, verification, synthesis, timing closure, hardware integration, and lab bring-up while collaborating with systems, hardware, software, and test engineers.

This position is fully remote but requires travel to Colorado for design reviews and testing as needed.

Experience Level

Mid-level - typically requires 5+ years of hands-on FPGA design and development experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and implement FPGA digital systems using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Own the full FPGA lifecycle: requirements, architecture, RTL development, simulation, synthesis, and validation.
  • Develop and execute verification strategies, including testbenches and simulation-based validation.
  • Perform timing analysis, place-and-route, and optimization using tools such as Vivado, Quartus, or Libero.
  • Integrate FPGA designs into hardware platforms and support system bring-up and lab validation; travel to Colorado when required.
  • Support compliance with industry standards (for example DO-254, FDA/ISO) and contribute to design reviews and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware and firmware issues during development and testing.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and constraints:

  • 5+ years of hands-on FPGA design and development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in HDL languages (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog).
  • Experience with FPGA toolchains (Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, Microchip Libero).
  • Knowledge of RTL design, digital design principles, and hardware interfaces.
  • Experience with simulation, verification, and debugging tools.
  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces (PCIe, Ethernet, DDR, SPI, etc.).
  • Ability to work from system-level requirements to implementation and verification and to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Must be a US Person (U.S. citizen or permanent resident) due to the nature of the work.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in aerospace (avionics, space) or medical device development.
  • Familiarity with DO-254, ARINC protocols, or other safety-critical development processes.
  • Experience with DSP or signal processing on FPGAs; programming skills in C/C++ or Python; embedded systems/SoC architecture experience.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
