Job Title
FPGA Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design, implement, verify, and integrate FPGA-based processor subsystems and high-speed serial interfaces for advanced processor applications in defense and aerospace systems. Work on FPGA logic, simulation, synthesis, timing analysis, board-level validation, and system integration within a cross-functional engineering team based in Huntsville, AL.
This role requires the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance post-start; U.S. citizenship or other status meeting U.S. export-control "U.S. Person" requirements is required.
Experience Level
Mid-level (posting includes Level 2 through Level 4). Years of related experience guidance: Level 2: 1+ years; Level 3: 3+ years; Level 4: 5+ years (senior). Exact level and required experience will depend on hire level.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include development, verification, and integration of FPGA designs and associated test environments.
- Create FPGA requirements, write RTL/HDL, and develop self-checking test benches and unit tests.
- Perform synthesis, timing analysis, Built-In-Test (BIT) implementation, and support debug and system integration.
- Develop and validate high-speed serial (SERDES) interfaces and processor subsystem features in FPGA hardware.
- Perform board-level testing, FPGA validation, troubleshooting, and support integration & test activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and maintain configuration control (e.g., GitLab).
- Stay current with FPGA design best practices, tool flows, and digital signal processing techniques.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed when applicable.
- Experience using FPGA design tools such as ModelSim, Xilinx Vivado/ISE, Intel (Altera) Quartus, or Microsemi/Microchip tools.
- Proven HDL development experience (Verilog/SystemVerilog or VHDL) and RTL design practices.
- Experience with simulation and verification tools (e.g., Synopsys VCS, NCSim) and creation of self-checking test benches.
- Experience with FPGA toolflows including synthesis, timing closure, and debug (ChipScope, logic analyzers).
- Familiarity with Xilinx/AMD and Microsemi/Microchip FPGA families and IP; experience with Versal devices is a plus.
- Experience with board-level bring-up, validation, and troubleshooting of FPGA-based systems.
- Experience with configuration management (GitLab preferred) and familiarity with Vivado/Vitis toolsets.
- Security: ability to obtain a U.S. Secret clearance post-start (U.S. Person required).
- Employer will not sponsor applicants for employment visa status.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Aeronautical, or related), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or non-U.S. equivalent is required or equivalent practical experience. Master’s degrees (MSEE, MSCE) are preferred. ABET accreditation is preferred but not required. Equivalent combinations of technical education and experience are accepted.
