Job Title

Engineer, Hardware Design (Internship)

Role Summary

Intern on the Systems Design & Validation team supporting development of evaluation and validation platforms for high-speed datacenter PHY/retimer/DSP products (200G+ per lane). Work spans schematic/layout reviews, board bring-up, measurement, and post-silicon validation with cross-functional engineering teams.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for students or recent graduates; no specific years of professional experience required.

Responsibilities

Support hardware platform design, lab validation, and automation under guidance from senior engineers.

  • Support design and development of validation and evaluation PCBs used for silicon bring-up and characterization.
  • Participate in circuit development, BOM selection, schematic capture, and layout considerations.
  • Assist board bring-up, bench testing, and data collection using lab instruments (oscilloscopes, signal generators, thermal controllers, etc.).
  • Analyze measurement data to support post-silicon validation, characterization, and debug.
  • Help characterize electrical building blocks and system behaviors (TX/RX, CDR, CTLE, FEC, PCS, etc.).
  • Contribute to bench automation (Python) for repeatable measurements and data capture.
  • Write technical documentation: test notes, lab reports, and application notes.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes for the internship.

  • Solid fundamentals in electronics: circuit elements, analog basics, and mixed-signal concepts.
  • Exposure to or interest in high-speed design topics (signal integrity, channel behavior, PCB layout fundamentals).
  • Basic understanding of silicon validation methodology and lab debug flow, or strong willingness to learn.
  • Programming experience for data analysis and automation (Python preferred; MATLAB acceptable).
  • Familiarity with schematic capture tools from coursework or projects.
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, able to take ownership of assigned tasks with mentorship.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and clear written and verbal communication.

Nice-to-have

  • Familiarity with IEEE 802.3 standards, datacenter interconnect ecosystems, or optical modules.
  • Project experience with SerDes systems, high-speed boards, or hardware bring-up.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (BERT, SSA, signal generators, etc.).
  • Strong technical writing and disciplined documentation habits.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (enrolled students are the target for this internship).
