Job Title

Electrical Engineer

Role Summary

Design, modify, and troubleshoot electrical/electronic assemblies, schematics, and PCBs to develop sensor transducers and semiconductor-process tool sensors. Work spans analog and digital circuit design, prototype bring-up, firmware validation, and supplier PCB management.

Member of the Applied Materials CoE team collaborating with sensor architects, physicists, and system software/hardware engineers to deliver complete sensor systems for semiconductor equipment.

Experience Level

Mid-level - requires 4+ years of experience in sensor development.

Responsibilities

Core duties include design, testing, integration, and supplier coordination for sensor hardware and embedded software.

  • Design, test, and analyze sensor transducers, analog and digital circuits, and PCBs.
  • Bring up, debug, and validate prototype sensors and embedded firmware.
  • Integrate sensors into chambers and verify hardware and embedded software functionality.
  • Test, debug, and repair PCBs and support supplier-site testing and acceptance.
  • Participate in schematic, layout, and BOM reviews and continuous-improvement activities.
  • Develop pass/fail test criteria and test procedures for microcontroller boards and other PCBs at supplier sites.
  • Provide timely status updates and proactive communication to stakeholders.

Requirements

Required skills and experience, followed by desirable additions.

  • Must-have: 4+ years of sensor development experience.
  • Strong knowledge of semiconductor processes, associated physics, and vacuum process tools.
  • Experience with schematic capture tools (e.g., OrCAD) and circuit simulation (e.g., SPICE).
  • Familiarity with serial interfaces and peripherals (I2S, I2C, SPI, ADCs, DACs).
  • Ability to meet objectives with minimal supervision; strong analytical and methodical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with remote teams and communicate status clearly.
  • Willingness to travel (~10%).
  • Nice-to-have: experience testing optical/optoelectronic assemblies and photodetectors/sources; embedded firmware development; FPGA experience; knowledge of industrial communication standards (e.g., EtherCAT).

Education Requirements

MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.
