Job Title

EDA Tools Hardware Engineer

Role Summary

Work on backend design automation and implementation methodology (RTL to GDSII) for advanced technology nodes to enable SoC development and tapeout. The role supports flow and tool development, interactions with product teams, PDK/library experts, and EDA vendors to ensure production-quality design enablement.

Position is eligible for Intel's hybrid work model and is based in Penang, Malaysia.

Experience Level

Mid-level β€” typically requires 4+ years of relevant experience in Physical Design, synthesis, place-and-route, timing methodologies, or flow development.

Responsibilities

Responsible for developing and supporting physical design methodologies, tools, and flows to enable SoC tapeouts and design ramp-up.

  • Drive RTL-to-GDSII enablement for advanced process technologies and coordinate with product teams and flow experts.
  • Develop TechLayer tools and flow settings for design partitioning, floorplanning, place-and-route, and clock tree synthesis.
  • Advance physical-design tools and flows: evaluate, develop, deploy tools and automation, and build methodology suited for future project needs.
  • Resolve designers' tool and methodology issues through debugging, root-cause analysis, and hands-on support toward TapeOut.
  • Provide design ramp-up support including training, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
  • Work with EDA vendors and foundry/PDK/library teams to ensure required tool features and flow compatibility.
  • Collaborate closely with product design teams and flow development groups to meet project requirements and quality targets.

Requirements

Key technical skills and experience (must-have vs. nice-to-have):

  • Must-have: Practical experience in physical design and backend implementation (synthesis, place-and-route, timing methodologies) and flow development for advanced nodes.
  • Must-have: Hands-on debugging and design-automation aptitude; ability to support designers through TapeOut.
  • Must-have: Experience with scripting and automation (Python, Tcl, Perl or similar).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with industry-standard EDA tools (e.g., Fusion Compiler, Innovus, PrimeTime, Genus, Tempus, Voltus, extraction tools, EM/IR tools, RedHawk SC).
  • Nice-to-have: Exposure to low-power techniques, PPA analysis, advanced implementation flows, and foundry PDK requirements.
  • Nice-to-have: Digital or analog/mixed-signal design experience and strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.

Education Requirements

BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering is specified in the posting. The minimum qualifications list: BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 4+ years' experience, or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 4+ years' experience. The posting also indicates requirements may be met via a combination of industry experience, internships, coursework, or research (equivalent practical experience acceptable).
