Design Engineer - Modeling
Lattice SemiconductorJob Title
Design Engineer - Modeling
Role Summary
Develop, validate, and deliver IP functional and behavioral models and related hardware collateral for internal engineering teams and software-facing customers. Translate IP specifications and hardware design intent into accurate, efficient, and maintainable models and associated deliverables.
Work closely with IP Design, Design Verification, Integration, Software, Architecture, and Applications teams to ensure model quality, equivalency to hardware, and efficient delivery across multiple projects.
Experience Level
Senior-level experience expected; the posting requests demonstrated senior-level experience in modeling and verification environments. Exact years of experience not specified.
Responsibilities
Implement, validate, and maintain behavioral models and verification artifacts; improve modeling and delivery workflows.
- Develop and maintain IP functional and behavioral models using Verilog/SystemVerilog and, where applicable, SystemC or C++.
- Translate IP specs, schematics, and RTL into model requirements, implementation plans, and verification objectives.
- Perform functional testing, audits, lint and CDC checks, regression testing, and hardware equivalency checks against approved references.
- Generate, audit, validate, and release timing, power, signal-integrity, configuration, and metadata deliverables for hardware/software integration.
- Investigate and resolve model behavior, hardware-to-software integration, and customer-facing issues.
- Develop scripts and reusable workflows to automate model generation, validation, audit, release, traceability, and reporting.
- Lead technical reviews, mentor junior engineers, and promote consistent modeling and verification practices.
- Identify process or quality gaps and drive practical improvements to reduce manual effort and improve scalability.
Requirements
Core technical skills and verification experience required; the degree requirement is listed separately under Education Requirements.
Must-have:
- Demonstrated senior-level experience in digital, custom, analog, FPGA, ASIC, or IP modeling and verification environments.
- Strong understanding of digital design fundamentals, RTL concepts, simulation, and the design/verification flow.
- Proficiency in Verilog and/or SystemVerilog for functional or behavioral modeling and simulation.
- Working knowledge of semiconductor and integrated-circuit principles, including effects of device behavior, layout, timing, power, and signal integrity on system behavior.
- Experience with digital simulation tools and familiarity with SPICE-type simulation or transistor-level concepts.
- Experience with scripting or programming languages for engineering automation (Python, Perl, TCL, Shell, etc.).
- Ability to develop verification plans, define measurable completion criteria, analyze results, and drive technical issues to closure.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to work across multi-site and cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience developing models for custom digital or analog IP behavior.
- Experience with timing, power, IBIS, signal-integrity, configuration, XML, or other metadata-based IP deliverables.
- Experience with model equivalency, regression automation, lint, CDC, or structured design-quality audits.
- Familiarity with FPGA development platforms and hardware-software enablement flows.
- Experience improving engineering processes, creating reusable methods, or deploying automation across multiple projects.
- Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership within a project team.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (as stated). No alternate "equivalent experience" language was specified in the source.
