Job Title
ASIC Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Work on physical implementation of large-scale ASICs, driving RTL-to-GDS or Gates-to-GDS flows for advanced process nodes. The role focuses on placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, verification, and timing closure within a cross-functional design team.
Experience Level
Mid-level β typically requires 5+ years of relevant physical design experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include ownership of physical implementation tasks and supporting verification and timing closure.
- Perform full physical design flow from RTL/Gates to GDS for large ASICs (100β400M gates).
- Execute placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, and timing closure.
- Run physical verification, formal checks, and timing analysis; debug DRC/LVS/TIM issues.
- Use commercial and in-house EDA tools (Synopsys, Cadence, Siemens) effectively.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts and run flows (UNIX/Linux, Tcl, Bash).
- Collaborate with front-end designers, verification, and tapeout teams to meet schedules.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Minimum 5 years experience in ASIC physical design.
- Hands-on experience with commercial EDA tools (Synopsys, Cadence, Siemens).
- Proven ability to execute RTL-to-GDS or Gates-to-GDS flows and achieve timing closure.
- Experience with placement, CTS, detailed routing, physical verification, formal verification, and STA.
- Proficiency in UNIX/Linux and scripting (Tcl, Bash) for automation and debug.
- Experience with advanced process nodes (7nm/5nm/3nm/2nm) and large gate-count designs is preferred.
- Nice-to-have: front-end design and synthesis knowledge.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering.
