Application Engineer

Role Summary

As an Application Engineer you will provide technical support to customers and field teams to enable FPGA design wins. You will support all phases of the design process through web-based and on-site assistance, system-level implementation guidance, and technical training.

Work closely with Altera field, distribution FAEs, specialist colleagues, and corporate applications to resolve issues and accelerate customer designs.

Experience Level

Mid-level — position requires approximately 5 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

The role focuses on customer-facing technical support and training throughout the product lifecycle.

• Provide web-based and on-site technical support to customers and distribution/field teams.
• Support all stages of FPGA design from concept to system-level integration and bring issues to closure.
• Analyze software/hardware trade-offs and advise on system implementation.
• Perform board bring-up and FPGA hardware debugging and signal-integrity analysis as needed.
• Deliver technical training to field teams, distributors, and customers.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and competencies.

• Experience with FPGA hardware design, board debug, and signal integrity analysis.
• Knowledge of HSSI protocols and experience debugging HSSI (Ethernet, Interlaken, SLIII/IV, CPRI).
• Experience with VHDL, Verilog, and FPGA verification tools; hands-on experience with high-density FPGA or ASIC design.
• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills; ability to drive issues to closure.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering or equivalent; minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (equivalent practical experience acceptable).
