Role Overview

The Senior RTL to Physical Design Engineer position at Microsoft involves working within the Compute Silicon & Manufacturing Engineering (CSME) organization, which is responsible for developing cutting-edge computer chips to support Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. This role is critical for ensuring the seamless transition from front-end design to back-end production, contributing to the quality and efficiency of silicon designs.

Experience Level

This position is designed for candidates who are at least at the mid-career level, seeking to leverage extensive experience and knowledge in hardware design and engineering.

Core Responsibilities

Your primary focus will be on bridging the gap between front-end design and back-end processes. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the quality assurance of RTL and collateral file drops to physical design.
  • Implementing feedback into design constraints and maintaining toolchain efficiency for optimal Power, Performance, Area (PPA).
  • Participating in flow development and automation, along with correlation of back-end flows.
  • Providing timely updates and addressing any project risks to the management team.

Essential Qualifications

The role requires a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields with 1+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s Degree with 4+ years of experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of experience. Candidates must also meet Microsoft's security screening requirements.

Education Requirements

A Doctorate, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline is required.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 8+ years in hardware design with a focus on RTL to physical design.
  • Expertise in synthesis, timing constraints, and PPA trade-offs.
  • Experience with static timing analysis and RTL to GDS flow.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Tcl, Perl, Python, and shell scripting.
  • Strong communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work within large teams and manage simultaneous streams of work.
