Job Title
Firmware Development Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop and maintain embedded firmware for Ethernet silicon, SoC subsystems and platform components within Intel's Data Center Group. Work across hardware, validation and software teams to deliver firmware features from requirements through production support.
Own firmware features end-to-end, support pre-silicon and post-silicon bring-up, and contribute to CI/CD, validation and release artifacts.
Experience Level
Senior — 6+ years of hands-on experience in embedded firmware/software development.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement embedded firmware, low-level drivers and HAL layers; integrate with RTOS or bare-metal environments.
- Own firmware features end-to-end: requirements, design, implementation, bring-up, validation, performance tuning and production support.
- Support pre-silicon workflows (simulation, emulation, FPGA) and post-silicon debug; develop test automation and Python tooling for firmware CI/CD.
- Debug complex HW/FW/SW issues using logs, traces, JTAG and lab instrumentation; perform root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with architecture, hardware, validation, manufacturing and software teams to review specs and ensure interface compliance.
- Create and maintain documentation, coding standards, unit/integration tests, CI pipelines and release artifacts; mentor engineers and lead reviews.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications:
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in design, implementation, testing and troubleshooting of software/firmware on embedded platforms.
- Strong C/C++ for firmware: memory-mapped I/O, bitfield manipulation, interrupts, DMA, cache/MMU basics, concurrency and performance constraints.
- Embedded systems fundamentals: boot flows, linker scripts, memory layout, watchdogs, power states, error handling and recovery.
- RTOS experience (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, XOS) and Linux kernel/driver familiarity for platform-facing firmware.
- Pre-silicon workflows: simulation, emulation, FPGA, test automation and CI/CD for firmware.
- Hardware/firmware bring-up and board-level debug; interpreting logic analyzer and oscilloscope traces as applicable.
- Debugging expertise across layers: JTAG/SWD, GDB, trace tools, crash dumps and log-based triage.
- Version control and development hygiene: Git, code reviews, branching/release practices and issue tracking.
- Experience with ARM, Xtensa, ARC processors and common communications protocols.
- Clear technical communication and cross-team coordination; proactive and mission-driven.
Nice-to-have:
- High-speed interfaces: Ethernet, PCIe, DDR/memory controllers, USB.
- Low-speed interfaces: I2C, SPI, UART.
- UEFI/BIOS, bootloaders, secure boot, manageability and cryptography fundamentals.
Education Requirements
B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
