Job Title
Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo's ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for LEO satellite communications and ground gateways. The role focuses on back-end physical design for communications chips that enable high-speed, low-latency links between space and ground.
Work closely with RTL/architecture, RF/analog, and system teams to deliver synthesis, floorplanning, place-and-route, power and timing closure in advanced process nodes.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 7+ years of relevant ASIC implementation experience (synthesis, STA, DFT, place-and-route for deep sub-micron nodes).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Drive architectural feasibility studies with RTL/logic designers and evaluate power–performance–area tradeoffs.
- Lead IO/core block physical implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place and route.
- Manage power and clock distribution, congestion analysis, timing closure, and IR drop analysis.
- Perform physical verification, implement ECOs, and drive sign-off activities.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and flows.
- Evaluate third-party IP and provide technical recommendations.
- Collaborate across multi-disciplinary and multi-site teams to integrate RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital flows.
Requirements
Required and preferred qualifications, summarized:
-
Must-have: 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience covering synthesis, static timing analysis (STA), DFT, and P&R in deep sub-micron process nodes.
- Proven experience with power/clock distribution, congestion and timing closure, IR drop analysis, and physical verification sign-off.
- Ability to develop physical design methodologies and work with third-party IP.
- Legal requirement: must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
-
Nice-to-have: experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows; familiarity with UPF low-power flows; experience in multi-site/multi-team environments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is stated; Master's or Ph.D. in EE or related field is listed as preferred. The posting also allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of degree.
