Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo's ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for satellite and ground communications. The team designs modems, high-speed interfaces, embedded processors, and DSP solutions targeting advanced technology nodes.
The role focuses on back-end physical implementation strategies and execution for communications chips enabling low-latency, high-throughput links between Low Earth Orbit satellites and gateways.
Experience Level
Senior β typically 7+ years of experience in ASIC implementation and physical design.
Responsibilities
Deliver physical design implementation and methodologies for communications chips; collaborate with RTL, architecture, and cross-functional teams.
- Drive architectural feasibility studies and PPA trade-off analysis with RTL/logic designers.
- Lead IO/Core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place & route.
- Perform timing closure (STA), congestion analysis, IR drop analysis, power/clock distribution design, and ECOs to achieve sign-off.
- Execute physical verification and prepare designs for tape-out.
- Develop and refine physical design methodologies and flows.
- Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Collaborate across multi-disciplinary and multi-site teams to deliver production-quality silicon.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, compliance, and workplace attributes.
- 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience including synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
- Hands-on experience with floorplanning, placement, routing, timing closure, IR drop analysis, power/clock distribution, congestion mitigation, ECO and sign-off flows.
- Experience working directly with RTL/logic designers to resolve implementation and architectural issues.
- Ability to develop physical design methodologies and improve implementation flows.
- Experience evaluating and integrating third-party IP into digital top flows.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working in cross-functional teams.
- Export control requirement: must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows.
- Familiarity with UPF and low-power design flows.
- Experience operating in multi-site or distributed team environments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical field is stated as the baseline; Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field is listed as preferred. The posting also allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of a specific degree.
