Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo's ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for satellite-to-ground communications and gateway systems. The role focuses on back-end physical design for high-speed communications chips in advanced process nodes.
Work with RTL, architecture, and systems teams to translate modem, interface, and DSP requirements into tapeout-ready physical designs.
Experience Level
Senior — requires significant industry experience. The posting specifies 7+ years of relevant ASIC implementation experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver physical implementation and methodologies for communications ASICs, collaborating across RTL, architecture, and RF/analog teams.
- Drive IO/core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, place-and-route, power/clock distribution, congestion and timing closure, IR drop analysis, ECO, and sign-off.
- Perform architectural feasibility studies and PPA (power-performance-area) trade-off analysis with RTL/logic teams.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and flows for deep sub-micron nodes.
- Conduct physical verification and resolve sign-off issues.
- Evaluate third‑party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Collaborate across multi-site teams and with RF/analog integration teams to enable mixed-signal portions of the design.
Requirements
Key technical and eligibility requirements; education details are summarized separately under Education Requirements.
- 7+ years in ASIC implementation with hands-on experience in synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
- Proven experience driving timing closure, IR drop analysis, physical verification, and ECO flows to sign-off.
- Ability to define and implement physical design methodologies and automation to improve productivity and quality.
- Experience evaluating and integrating third-party IP into chip flows.
- Strong collaboration skills to work with RTL/architecture, RF/analog teams, and multi-site engineering teams.
- Export control eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum.
-
Nice-to-have: experience with RF/analog/mixed-signal integration, UPF low-power flows, and multi-site delivery.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field is listed as preferred.
