Job Title

Senior FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Join MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development team to design and implement prototype FPGA/ASIC systems for advanced sensor, communication, and navigation applications on embedded hardware platforms. Work focuses on rapid prototyping, system integration, and delivering proof-of-concept solutions for government R&D projects of national significance.

Experience Level

Senior — this role is for experienced engineers. See Education Requirements for the formal years-of-experience guidance tied to degree level.

Responsibilities

The team delivers end-to-end hardware prototypes and implements algorithms in hardware and software on embedded platforms. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, and integrate FPGA components and custom IP for prototype systems.
  • Develop RTL (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog) and perform synthesis and simulation to meet timing and resource constraints.
  • Implement algorithms in hardware and software on embedded SoC/MPSoC platforms.
  • Integrate third-party IP and system-level interfaces (memory-mapped peripherals, interrupts).
  • Participate in architecture, verification, test, documentation, and version control activities for digital designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to rapidly prototype sensor/communication/navigation systems.

Requirements

Must-have skills, security, and workplace requirements.

  • Proven experience with RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog) and RTL synthesis/simulation tools.
  • Experience implementing complex embedded systems and deploying on reconfigurable SoC platforms.
  • Familiarity with design, verification, test, and deployment best practices; experience integrating third-party IP.
  • Hands-on experience with scripting and build tools (TCL, Python, CMake) is beneficial.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship required (per government eligibility) and ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Position requires a minimum of four days per week on-site in the Bedford, MA office.

Education Requirements

Minimum qualifications: typically a Bachelor’s degree plus ~5 years related experience; or a Master’s degree plus ~3 years; or a PhD with relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience. Preferred: M.S. or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
