Job Title
Optical Packaging and Component Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, and support the packaging and integration of optical components and sub-assemblies (laser packages, fiber arrays, fiber-interface devices) for silicon photonics products used in data center interconnects and high-performance systems.
Work across design, procurement, characterization, packaging and high-volume manufacturing to deliver reliable optical assemblies that integrate into larger systems.
Experience Level
Mid-level (no explicit years of experience specified).
Responsibilities
Key day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Design and develop optical components and sub-assemblies, including laser packages, fiber-arrays, and fiber-interface devices.
- Provide full life-cycle support: initial design, procurement, characterization, packaging, and scale-up to volume manufacturing.
- Develop and transfer assembly processes with manufacturing and assembly partners; define process controls and documentation.
- Plan and execute performance, reliability assessment, and qualification programs for optical components and assemblies.
- Contribute to test and demonstration vehicles and support integration of optical assemblies into larger systems.
Requirements
Required skills and relevant experience:
-
Must-have: Strong experience with fiber-optic and integrated-optics components and sub-assemblies; hands-on experience with multi-fiber connectors is highly desirable.
-
Must-have: Practical knowledge of production processes for micro-optics, fiber-optic interface devices, and related sub-assemblies.
-
Must-have: Experience running reliability assessments and qualification programs for optical components.
-
Must-have: Experience with free-space optical design software such as Zemax or Code-V.
-
Must-have: Experience with mechanical CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) and the ability to collaborate on mechanical integration.
-
Must-have: Ability to collect and analyze large datasets (e.g., JMP, DataConductor, or similar tools).
-
Nice-to-have: Prior experience with vendor engagement and component procurement.
-
Note: The role may require eligibility to access export-controlled technology; candidates may be subject to an export license review prior to employment.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
